If you are new to fitness and bodybuilding this article is worth checking out. All the Fitness and Bodybuilding supplements explained in simplified terms.
What are Supplements.
When talking about fitness and bodybuilding, at some point one has to use supplements in order to get the necessary nutrients and stuff in the body which the normal food might not be able to deliver. Supplements are no necessity if one's diet is enriched with all the nutrients they require such as Protein, Vitamins, Minerals and etc.
Supplements do hold bad reputation in common people's mind but in reality they are not harmful when consumed in right way and proportion and also genuine and from a well recognized brand. Getting cheap and local stuff might be harmful which is why most of the people are afraid of getting one for themselves.
Protein Supplements.
There are many kinds of protein supplements available in the market of different food sources and brands such as Whey Protein Supplements, Egg Protein, Soy Protein, Casein Protein, and Pea Protein. Among all the above protein supplements whey protein is considered to be best one as it is easily digested and absorbed in the body.
Whey Protein.
Whey Protein is the most popular kind of protein supplements. Whey Protein is derived from milk whey(the yellowish liquid left when milk gets curdled) which makes it a Vegetarian protein supplement but not Vegan. Whey Protein Contains all the essential amino acids which make it complete source of protein. There are 3 Different Kinds of Whey Protein which are
- Whey Protein Concentrate :- The Cheapest and least processed whey protein. It contains some amount of Fats and Milk Sugar(Lactose) in it.
- Whey Protein Isolate :- The Expensive one which more processed and filtered and contains less amount of Fats and Milk Sugar(Lactose). The digestibility of this kind of whey protein is more than concentrate.
- Whey Protein Hydrolysate :- This is most expensive kind of whey Protein Supplement which is more refined and contains least to zero amount of Fats and Milk Sugar(Lactose). This kind of whey protein is the most superior one. It not recommended to general people. People Competing for Competitions use this whey protein.
Casein Protein.
Casein Protein like Whey Protein is derived from the same source which is milk but not from the liquid whey, instead casein protein is extracted from the other half of the curdled milk. Casein protein also has complete amino acid profile. It is slow digesting protein and takes approximately 6 Hours to get digested. This Protein supplements is not recommended as a post work out shake and also it is not prescribed to everyone. Mostly Athletes use Casein Protein for their physique goals. It is of no harm if one uses until it is sourced from genuine sources.
Egg Protein.
People who do not want to consume whey because of lactose intolerance or any other reason can go with Egg Protein. Like the previous two this one also has complete amino acid profile. It not vegetarian supplement as the name suggests. The digestibility and absorption of Egg Protein Supplements stand in between Whey Protein and Casein Protein, not the fast digesting also not the slowest digesting. Genuine sourcing from reputed brand is recommended for this supplement.
Soy and Pea Protein.
There is no need to explain both Soy and Pea protein independently as both share common grounds. Both are Vegan Protein sources, both are derived from plant sources and also both have incomplete amino acid profile which is the only problem with vegan protein supplements also the amount of heavy metals found in plant based protein supplement is way higher than Other sources such as Whey, Casein or Egg.
Soy Protein is not recommended for Males as it might cause hormonal imbalances in them. The Vegan Protein supplements are ideal for people are completely following vegan diet. As for Vegetarians, I would still suggest them Whey Protein as a better and Healthier alternative.
Protein Blends.
Protein Blends are generally of two type.
- Vegetarian Blend : In this protein blend only milk derived protein is used. The constituent of this kind of protein can comprise of Whey Protein Concentrate, Isolate and Hydrolysate or Whey Protein Concentrate, Isolate and Casein Protein.
- Non-Vegetarian Blend : The only difference here is that one of the constituent protein mentioned above is replaced by Egg Protein except for Whey Protein Isolate.
BCAAs.
BCAA stands for Branched Chain Amino Acid. BCAA generally comprise of nothing but 3 Essential amino acids which are L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine and L-Valine and some manufacturers also include Glutamine in them. I think this is the most controversial supplement after steroids.
Generally The protein supplements mentioned above or any other food source which has complete amino acid profile contains the above listed amino acid and there is no need to consume additional. The brands and some dietitian suggest that the combination of above listed amino acid consumed in between workout shows better muscle recovery while there is separate base of people and professional athletes and dietitian who oppose the Idea of Consuming BCAA additionally.
I leave it on you to decide whether you should have BCAA or not. Please comment down below.
Creatine.
Alright, so this fitness supplement is different. Using Creatine Monohydrate for bodybuilding is not a child's game. The Creatine Recommendation is different for different people and cannot be generalized. If you want to use Creatine Monohydrate then please consider the consultation of Dietitian, Professional Trainer or a Doctor.
But if want the general idea on what it is used for then here it is. Creatine Monohydrate is a substance found in Meat. Generally it is high in Red Meat and Fish. Creatine Monohydrate is helpful is synthesizing more ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate) molecules which are considered to be the energy molecules for Biological Organisms. Typically the food isn't enough to provide the amount of Creatine to show some significant progress and in those cases, there comes the need to use creatine monohydrate.
Glutamine.
Glutamine is said to be the most abundant amino acid in the body. Many BCAA supplements do offer glutamine in them and by the it is not an essential amino acid in any manner. It is not harmful either. Many people claim that Glutamine benefits in the muscle recovery and that might true in some cases.
Multivitamins ,Testosterone Booster and Nitric Acid.
Multivitamins
Multivitamins is something with which all most all people are familiar with but still if you don't about multivitamins then, it is a kind supplement mostly in capsule or tablet form which contains almost all the vitamins in it.
Testosterone Booster
The testosterone booster (not steroids) contain Magnesium Stearate and Silicon Di oxide as a common ingredient. There is nothing general for this product and compositions vary from brand to brand. It is humbly requested that you should get confused Testosterone booster with Steroids. Consult a Dietitian or a Certified Trainer before consuming.
Nitric Acid
Nitric Acid acts as Vasodilator (Dilating Blood Vessels) in order to provide nutrients effectively.
Also consult a Dietitian or a Certified Trainer before consuming.
Pre-Workout Supplements.
Apart from Some Vitamins, Amino acid Blend, Creatine and Caffeine, Pre-Workout supplements does not contain anything extra. Pre-Workout are ideal for people who have been in weight lifting for a while. Pre-Workout does feels more better than coffe or any other stuff. Also they are convenient to use.
